KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) – Lewis Hamilton ran and passed Charles Leclerc in the final laps to win the British Grand Prix in front of a grateful home crowd. Uralkali Haas F1 team drivers Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher, based in Kannapolis, finished 17th and 18th in round 10 of the 2021 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, which took place on Sunday at the Silverstone Circuit.

“That was a good race for us today,” said team boss Günther Steiner. “We didn’t end where we wanted to end, but both guys fought hard and clean – that’s part of learning and we want to move that forward. We got off to a good start. There was a lot of drama at the start of the race and we went through it very calmly and both of them delivered. At the moment this is possible. They both fought hard but cleanly and that is the most important thing for me. “

Schumacher started from 18th place, Mazepin from 19th place and was fitted with Pirelli’s P Zero Yellow Medium tires. Both drivers made strong starts on a frenetic first lap, Schumacher won two places and Mazepin made up one place. The race was then stopped because of a serious accident with World Championship leader Max Verstappen.

“It was’nt easy.” said Schumacher. “Unfortunately we had problems with the tires and the approach we had. We tried not to overheat the tires in the first few laps and it seems like Nikita put in a little more pressure on the first few laps and still managed to keep his tires in the window. I will have to analyze how to do it as I had a lot of leeway to go faster. We have to learn from it and try to become stronger in Budapest. “

Race director Michael Masi decided on a standing restart, from which Schumacher ran as 15th and Mazepin as 18th, before joining a rhythm at the end of the train. Schumacher came on lap 25 to switch to white hard tires, while Mazepin also boxed a lap later to take on the tougher compound. Shortly after the pit stop phase, Mazepin overtook his teammates and they kept their track order up to the checkered flag – they finished 17th and 18th after 52 laps and clinched the ninth consecutive double finish for the Uralkali Haas F1 Team.

“It was tough – very hot! The weekend was positive, ”said ikita Mazepis. “I was very happy with the balance we got out of the car, but we were slow compared to other teams – we couldn’t fight anyone today. Of course, we couldn’t change the car as much as on other weekends, but I think we found a very good set-up at the beginning of the weekend, which may not have been the best in qualifying, but then one track worked out quite well, That was so humiliating. I had to push hard at the beginning to be ahead because you know it’s difficult to overtake on this track and I’ve used a lot of my tires, but then I’ve probably done my best overtaking maneuver in the last three years. ”

In the lead, Lewis Hamilton took his 99th Formula 1 win and eighth at Silverstone after recovering from a penalty for his contact with Verstappen on the first lap. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was second, Mercedes-Valtteri Bottas third.

The Uralkali Haas F1 Team will be back in action at the Hungarian Grand Prix, which will be held from July 30th to August 1st at the Hungaroring.
