Shortly before qualifying began, it was already exciting for Lewis Hamilton. The Briton had to go to the commissioners because of two different incidents, but did not receive a grid penalty in the end.
Two incidents with the stewards
In the third free practice, yellow flags were waved because Max Verstappen drove slowly over the track. However, Hamilton drove on at full speed and was made aware of the commissioners. “There was no yellow,” replies Hamilton at Motorsport-Total.com. According to him, there was no standing car. Hamilton was right because, in the stewards’ view, the yellow flag was a mistake.
In the second incident, he stopped Nikita Mazepin while the Russian was doing a fast lap. Hamilton says he’s already apologized to the Haas F1 driver. It was a tricky situation because Hamilton never saw the Russian coming due to the curves and the walls at the edge of the track. Mercedes was fined for this and Hamilton was reprimanded.
