- Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen are out after five and four years in the team at the end of the season.
- Haas ‘high water mark was fifth in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship in 2018.
- The team has not yet reached a podium in its history and is currently ninth in the F1 constructors’ championship.
The Haas F1 Team will switch from drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen at the end of the season.
The team made the announcement early Thursday morning. A replacement for 2021 has not been announced. The candidates who are supposed to be under discussion in 2021 include Formula 2 drivers Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman as well as the best F1 Free agents Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Perez.
Grosjean has been on the team for five years while Magnussen is nearing the end of his fourth year on the team. While the couple has been successful in the past – Haas took a surprising fifth place in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship in 2018 – positive results have been difficult to achieve in the past two years.
In 2019, the Ferrari-focused team slipped back to ninth place (out of 10 teams) in the overall standings with just 28 points. This year the team is ninth again with just three points. Each driver has only one top 10 result this season.
The team has not reached a podium in more than four seasons.
The only two drivers with a longer current tenure in the series are surprisingly the Mercedes tandem of six-time F1 champions Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
Grosjean’s best day with Haas was possibly the team’s first F1 race in 2016 when he finished sixth at the Australian F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne. Magnussen achieved a career-best ninth place in the drivers’ standings in 2018 and made it into the top 10 eleven times in 21 aces. Magnussen achieved fifth place this year in both Bahrain and Austria.

“I would like to thank both Romain (Grosjean) and Kevin (Magnussen) for their hard work and dedication to the Haas F1 team over the past few seasons,” said Günther Steiner, Haas Team Principal. “Romain was an integral part of our business as we tried to get a driver on board with speed and experience. His results in early 2016 were a fair reward, not only for his own talent but also for the tremendous effort the team had put into getting to the start this season.
“When Kevin came in a season later we saw an immediate return with both cars scoring points and of course our first colons of that year ended in Monaco. We have a lot of fond memories together – especially our 2018 season when we finished just Fifth overall in our third season. Romain and Kevin made a significant contribution to this success. Of course there are still a lot of races in the 2020 season.
“It was undoubtedly a challenging year, but both drivers gave everything behind the wheel of the VF-20. We appreciate their contributions and their experience in helping the team move forward to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December.”
