- Haas F1 team boss Günther Steiner promises that the 2021 season will be a transition for the team as it focuses on its 2022 car.
- Haas finished ninth of 10 teams in the 2020 Formula 1 constructors’ championship, just three points ahead of Williams and five points behind Alfa Romeo.
- Hass has since dropped its two 2020 drivers – Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen – and replaced them with rookies Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.
Haas F1 team boss Günther Steiner says that Haas has no plans to develop his car in 2021.
“Our goal is to go back to where we were in 2018,” said the 55-year-old Steiner to the German broadcaster n-tv.
That year, Haas finished a career-best fifth in the F1 Constructors’ Championship, but it’s been on a downward spiral ever since. The team finished ninth in 2020.
Haas has replaced both Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean with rookies Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin for the new season. Steiner believed that the rookies won’t hold the team back, but that he doesn’t expect a major rise in the overall standings this season.
Steiner starts his sixth season at the head of the six-year-old team.
“If they fight without damaging the team, I have no problem with that,” said Steiner, adding that the two rookies will fight with a car that will not be developed in the coming season.
“It will be a year of transition,” said Steiner. “From next week we will only work in the wind tunnel in 2022. If everything does not go wrong, we will not do anything with the car in 2021.”

Still, he hopes Haas won’t be the last to be dead in this year’s F1 constructors’ championship. Almost exactly that happened last year, as the five-year-old Formula 1 team only scored three points this season. Haas finished ninth overall, just three points ahead of the Williams F1 team and five points behind Alfa Romeo.
Next up in the 202o rating was AlphaTauri with 107 points.
“It would be ideal to leave Alfa Romeo and Williams behind. But it will be difficult. It will be a fight like last year,” said Steiner. “Our engine will certainly be better, Alfa has that too, but maybe we can catch up with Williams. Otherwise, not much more is possible at the moment because we were just too far away last year.
“For me it would be a success if at the end of the year we had two drivers who have learned a lot and are ready for 2022 so that we don’t make any more mistakes.”
