KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) – Uralkali Haas F1 team drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, based in Kannapolis, finished the 19th and 20th rounds of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship at the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday in the Intercity Istanbul Park.
In wet conditions, Schumacher started from 14th position on Pirelli Cinturato Green Intermediates, but was unfortunately involved in an early collision with Alpine Fernando Alonso. Schumacher was tipped into a spin at turn four and fell back to the end of the field. The stewards found that Schumacher was the innocent party and imposed a time penalty on Alonso. Schumacher dropped to the bottom of the field and came on lap 41 of 58 to take on another set of intermediates. He kept the car up to the checkered flag and classified himself in 19th place.
“We knew it was going to be tough and I think because there wasn’t any real chaos, the result we drove today was realistic anyway,” said Schumacher. “We learned a lot again, we learned how to be competitive at the start of the race and we just have to analyze how we can do it even better. Overall, it was a very positive weekend. There is no reason for me to be sad because I’m not in the championship fight, so all the best from this weekend – I’ll take it – and I’ll leave everything bad behind and learn from it.

Mazepin also started on intermediates due to the conditions and took the green flag in 18th place. Mazepin avoided the drama to hold his position before relinquishing a seat to Nicholas Latifi of Williams. Mazepin made his pit stop on lap 36, stayed on the intermediates and finished 20th as every driver reached the checkered flag despite the conditions.
“The race organizers have done a great job since last year to improve the conditions for the drivers,” said Mazepin. “From my side, it was pure pleasure to be here all weekend. I drove a clean race, had no problems on the first lap and drove as well as I could. Unfortunately, the conditions today were very strange as the track never really dried out. I didn’t think that intermediate tires would take time to slick and give us good times. These conditions are priceless because as difficult as they are to drive, they are very useful. “
At the top, Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas brought a year-long victory drought to a tight control procedure for his tenth career win ahead of Red Bull Racing drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
The Uralkali Haas F1 Team returns to action at the United States Grand Prix from October 22nd to 24th at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
