Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean is spending the second day in the hospital after a violent crash

  • Haas F1 team driver Romain Grosjean is expected to be released from Bahrain Defense Hospital on Tuesday.
  • Grosjean will be replaced by reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi at this week’s Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain.
  • Fittipaldi will be the first F1 reserve driver to see action in a Formula 1 race since Paul di Resta made an emergency start for Williams in 2017.

Haas F1 team driver Romain Grosjean stays in the Bahrain Defense Force hospital on Monday after miraculously stepping out of his fiery Haas F1 team car at the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix on Sunday.

Grosjean’s car went up in flames when it hit a barrier at Turn 3 of the Bahrain International Circuit and partially broke through it. The team announced on Monday that Grosjean is still recovering from burns on the back of both hands and that he is expected to be released on Tuesday.

However, Grosjean will not be in the Haas car for the Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain this coming weekend. The team will instead turn to driver Pietro Fittipaldi to drive Grosjean’s car. This is the first time Grosjean has not been in a Haas car since a race since he retired on the way to the starting grid for the Brazilian F1 Grand Prix in Interlagos in 2016.

Fittipaldi, 24, is the grandson of two-time F1 champion and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi. Pietro Fittipaldi was tested for Haas in 2018 and 2019. The race weekend in Bahrain this weekend marks the time Fittipaldi will drive in the team’s VF-20 car.

“After it was decided that the best thing for Romain (Grosjean) was to skip at least one race, the decision to put Pietro (Fittipaldi) in the car was pretty easy,” said Haas team principal Günther Steiner VF-20 and he have known us as test and reserve drivers in the last two seasons. It’s the right thing and obviously a good opportunity for him. He was patient and always prepared for the opportunity – and now the time has come. That’s why we want him in the car and I’m sure he’ll do a good job. Getting called at the last minute is very demanding, but like I said, I think it’s the right thing for the Haas F1 Team to do. “

Fittipaldi will be the first reserve driver to actually see races since Paul di Resta was asked to make an emergency start for the Williams F1 team after Felipe Massa fell ill on the F1 Grand Prix weekend in Hungary.

“Most of all, I’m glad Romain (Grosjean) is safe and healthy,” said Fittipaldi. “We are all very happy that his injuries are relatively minor after such a major incident. Obviously it’s not an ideal situation to get my first opportunity to compete in Formula 1, but I am very grateful to Gene Haas and Günther Steiner for their trust in me to get behind the wheel this weekend.

“I’ve been with the team a lot this season, both on the track and in simulator sessions. So I’m familiar with the team’s operations on a Grand Prix weekend. It will be exciting to start my first career in formula.” 1 – I will give everything and I am looking forward to starting free practice in Bahrain on Friday. “
