Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean escapes a violent crash at the Bahrain GP

SAKHIR, Bahrain – Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean appears to have got away with burns after his car crashed and caught in flames shortly after the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 34-year-old French driver slipped off the track on the first lap and his Haas car went up in flames after being cut in half by a barrier. Grosjean got out with the fire behind him and his racing helmet was singing.

He was stuck in the burning wreck for almost 10 seconds before somehow finding a way out. The racing footage showed security guards reaching the car immediately, but Grosjean was still trapped inside. He managed to find a way out, jumping through the flames and grabbing the scalding metal barrier as he jumped back onto the track and excruciatingly shook hands before the stewards helped him.

Moments later, Grosjean was shown on TV chatting with the racing doctor in the medical car.

Grosjean was then helped out of the car and into an ambulance. He seemed shocked, but didn’t seem injured right away, save for a slight limp.

Drivers and team members stood up and applauded when they saw the pictures of Grosjean climbing over the barrier to safety and being sprayed with a fire extinguisher.

It seemed like an extraordinary escape after his car was cut in half upon hitting the barrier.

The accident happened when Grosjean lost his footing and slid to the right where his rear wheel locked the front of Daniil Kvyat’s Alpha-Tauri and he flew into the barrier.

Grosjean’s teammate Kevin Magnussen looked desperate when he saw the footage as drivers waited in the paddock for the race to restart while officers returned to the scene of the accident to pick up debris around the wrecked car.
