Haas F1 team boss Günther Steiner says it is quite possible that Haas will be the last to end dead at the Formula 1 World Championship in 2021.
Most observers agree after the test in Bahrain that Williams may have jumped ahead of the American team since the end of last season.
While Haas is solely focused on the 2022 regulations, Williams recently gained new owners and made important changes to the 2021 car. The compromise on the aerodynamic changes, according to lead driver George Russell, is that the 2021 Williams car is now “incredibly wind sensitive”.
“We decided to do something to get more downforce, but this comes at the expense of a more sensitive behavior.”
The 23-year-old British driver defended Williams’ decision.
“We have found that if we are consistently at the same pace as last year, we will not get points,” said Russell. “Now we just have to be quick in two races to maybe finish eighth or ninth in the championship.”
Haas boss Steiner admits that the situation in which Williams is making progress with his program for 2021 could leave Haas dead by the end of the season. Last year, Haas finished ninth with three points. Williams didn’t meet. That could be reversed this season.
“It is possible,” Steiner told Sky Italia. “If that happens we have to work on it. We made the decision to make this season a transition season, so we’d have to find out. But we decided to do it because it’s the best option for us.”
“Sometimes it is necessary to take a step back before taking two steps forward.”
