Grosjean to make Indianapolis oval debut with Andretti in rookie test

Romain Grosjean will be driving for the first time next week as part of an IndyCar rookie orientation test on the shores of Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Frenchman switched to the American open wheel series last winter after retiring from his F1 career.

Former Haas and Lotus driver Grosjean excelled in his rookie sub-season, initially only signing on street and street circuits before crashing into ovals at Gateway at the end of the season.

He will now be participating in the rookie program next week alongside seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson to prepare for next year’s Indy 500.

Grosjean is moving to one of the biggest teams in the series, Andretti Autosport, and Haas team boss Günther Steiner is hoping for his former driver’s further successes at the Russian Grand Prix.

“We haven’t talked a lot lately, we had a couple of WhatsApps because he’s always busy and I’m always busy,” Steiner said.

“I saw the race at Laguna Seca and it looks like he’s having fun, which I’m very happy about because he was an integral part of Haas in actually getting Haas up and running.

“I hope he is fine, he now has the opportunity to have a very good car. I mean, his car this year didn’t seem that bad, he fought so fair with other people.”

“The biggest thing is that he’s enjoying himself and hopefully he can get some good results next year because he’s got good results this year too.”
