Günther Steiner talks about how much the Haas drivers learn in Formula 1 and says that they “drink from a hose”.
Steiner and Haas made the decision in 2020 to drop their experience with Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen for 2021 and beyond and bring in two rookies in the form of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.
So far, the lack of experience in F1 that Schumacher and Mazepin have gained has been evident. Both crashed in the first two laps of the year.
The second race in Imola turned out to be particularly difficult due to the difficult track conditions due to rain.
Steiner is of the opinion that such challenges are good for the development of his drivers.
“We just got the rain and had to deal with it and learn from it,” he said in Haas’ official preview of the Portuguese Grand Prix.
“The drivers are drinking from a water hose, every Grand Prix brings something new to the table.
“For learning, it is ideal to just learn things like the processes and behavior in these situations. If you’ve done these things once, the second time – it’ll be a lot less stressful for sure, I would say.
“Do you want everything at the beginning? Maybe not, but when it comes down to it, you take the experience. I think it’s a good thing to have all of these new experiences. “

The signing of two newcomers was part of Haas’ broader decision to prioritize 2022 over 2021. The team therefore decided not to develop this year’s car.
As a result, your car was comfortably the slowest on the grid in the first two races and the only one that didn’t even make it out of the first quarter.
Steiner has said that was expected and that the main goal this year is simply to prepare the drivers for next year and before the third race he stands by it.
“Nothing else than the first two races – get as much experience as you can,” said the Italian.
“Get both drivers to the finish line in both races, learn more and expand your racing knowledge in Formula 1.
“The goal hasn’t changed, we just keep our heads down and learn as much as possible.”
