Antonio Giovinazzi believes it is of vital importance to his F1 future that he continue to have one foot in the paddock at Ferrari for the next season.

Ferrari has confirmed that after Alfa Romeo’s sacking at the end of the year, Giovinazzi will be a substitute driver at Scuderia after three seasons on the team.

Giovinazzi will dovetail his program in Formula E by acting as deputy to Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at 12 Grand Prix in 2022, while Haas driver Mick Schumacher will take on the same role at the remaining 11 races.

In an interview with GPFans before Ferrari’s announcement, Giovinazzi made it clear that “it’s really important to keep one foot in this paddock next year”.

Although the Italian is signed to FE next season, he has made no secret of his desire to get another seat in F1 in 2023.

“You definitely have more power,” added Giovinazzi, who at the time of the interview in Abu Dhabi had already been talking to Ferrari about his new role.

“For me it’s really important to stay with Ferrari. They have more power and if you want to come back it’s easier.

“I’ve been part of this family since 2017. It’s been a long time, five years. That was the team with whom I signed a contract at the end of 2016 after I left GP2.

“They were the family that gave me the chance to compete in Formula 1 with Alfa Romeo in 2019, so they were important to me.”
