According to Haas, fighting Williams is the limit of his ambitions for the 2021 Formula 1 season after his performance in Bahrain.
Haas, who finished ninth in the constructors’ championship last year, decided against developing his largely unchanged car beyond the upcoming Imola lap.
Instead, it has decided to focus its resources on 2022, when revised technical regulations are introduced.
Haas finished last in Bahrain with rookies Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, who qualified as the slowest drivers.
In racing gear, Schumacher was the last of the classified runners in 16th place, a minute behind Williams’ George Russell, while Mazepin retired after three corners.
When asked about Haas’ hopes for the rest of 2021, Haas boss Günther Steiner said: “I would say that if we can lead the fight to Williams, it will be what we can do [do].
“I am very realistic. We don’t try to do more than that.
“I think the biggest amount we can get out of the car to prepare or better prepare our drivers is just making them experience. We want to do that so they are ready when we have a better car.
“This is exactly our plan for this year.”
Four teams, including Williams, failed to score in Bahrain, despite Haas officially finishing last in the overall standings due to the countback of the results.
