The Haas team’s technical partnership with Ferrari, once rated positive, is now contributing to Haas’ struggles in 2020.
Haas F1 team boss Günther Steiner was asked if it was satisfactory to see the duel between the American team Romain Grosjean and the fighting Ferrari plants during the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa. Grosjean finished 15th, while Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc finished 13th and 14th.
“Well, at least Romain could fight, but let’s face it,” Steiner said. “We don’t go to world championship races so we can fight for 13th place. What’s satisfying about that?”
Steiner’s comments come when Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto recently said it could take years for the Italian team to get back into full swing in Formula 1. That reveal is a major blow to Haas, who in a year ran out of The Best Engines in Formula 1 to the worst after the 2019 legality scandal.
Ferrari, who finished second in the F1 constructors’ championship for the past five years, is currently fifth in the overall standings. Haas has only scored one point this year and is just trying to get the goalless Williams to ninth place overall.
Haas appeared to have turned the corner in 2018 when the team finished fifth overall, but that success has proven short-lived.
“We know where we are right now. You can imagine how we feel,” said Steiner. “Nothing is going on with the engine and the cars will be more or less in this shape in 2021. In Monza (this week) we will see a copy of Spa.
“Ferrari can’t do anything with the engine this season. I can’t say exactly what they’re going to do for 2021 but I know they’re working on the problem if I ask about it every day. But I don’t have any exact answers either . We won’t find out exactly where we will be with the engine until next year. “
