Colton Herta has stated that any future promotion to F1 must be supported by Ferrari should a team like Haas call.
Herta delivered a sensational performance in the second IndyCar race of the season on Sunday in St. Petersburg, Florida, by leading 97 of the 100 laps and winning 2.493 seconds ahead of the two-time champion Josef Newgarden.

The 21-year-old Californian, who spent the 2016 season with Carlin in the British F3 Championship and the Euroformula Open Championship, has shown that F1 “is definitely the people watching”.
In an interview with Racer, Herta added: “I would love it if nothing else comes out of it, just test a Formula 1 car. Because I’m sure that even the bad cars feel pretty amazing when they are driven.”
If this team is the American team Haas – as was to be expected – a confident Herta has made it clear that if he lands a drive he has to drive with the support of Ferrari.
“Honestly, if I got the call to go to Haas or something, it would be something I would be interested in, but only if it came from a Ferrari supported program and then I had the opportunity to move up.” added Herta.
“I’m not going to go there and sign a three year deal just with Gene Haas, but I would sign a deal with Ferrari and if they put me in a car like that, I would drive it and try to get on a top team. ”
Herta’s team boss Michael Andretti has made it clear that he will not hold back his driver should a top F1 team call.
“From a selfish point of view, I hope he will drive for me for many, many, many years,” said Andretti. “On the other hand, I don’t want to stand in his way.
“If a team like Ferrari calls him, I won’t get in his way. But if one of the teams calls in last place or penultimate place in the championship, I could say, “Yeah, I want to keep you here.”
“I would do him a favor by keeping him out of these teams. I know a lot of these people there now and would encourage it if the situation is good.”
