Ferrari junior Shwartzman joins Haas F1 for rookie test in Abu Dhabi

Ferrari junior Shwartzman joins Haas F1 for rookie test in Abu Dhabi

The 22-year-old Russian was team mate of the current Haas driver Mick Schumacher in Prema Racing in Formula 2 last season, finished fourth in the championship with four wins and is currently third in this year’s overall standings.

The 2019 FIA F3 Champion will take control of the current Haas VF-21 at the rookie test, which takes place the week after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season finishes in December.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Haas F1 Team, Scuderia Ferrari and the Ferrari Driver Academy for this great opportunity,” said Shwartzman.

“This will be my first test with Haas and I’m really looking forward to meeting a new team, a new environment and learning as much as possible from them.

“Having the chance to drive for another F1 team is just amazing and I can’t wait to work with everyone.”

Shwartzman, originally from Saint Petersburg, is no stranger to Formula 1 machines as he had the opportunity to test a Ferrari F1 car last year as part of his Ferrari Driver Academy program in Fiorano.

Last year he also took part in the rookie test in Abu Dhabi behind the wheel of the Ferrari 2020.

“We look forward to testing with Robert in Yas Marina in December,” added Haas team boss Gunther Steiner.

“It is obviously rated highly by Ferrari – since the end of 2017 it has been part of their driver program.

“His ability becomes clear when you look at his achievements in recent years – especially his rookie campaign in Formula 2 last year – which competed against our own two drivers, Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.

“We are pleased to be able to enable Robert to drive a Formula 1 car and look forward to working with him in Abu Dhabi.”

The one-day rookie test is carried out in conjunction with a two-day 18-inch Pirelli tire test for the team’s regular racers.

Aston Martin had previously announced that its simulator driver Nick Yelloly will get a test run in Abu Dhabi, while Alfa Romeo is hoping that its Mercedes recruit Valtteri Bottas will be released for the test to begin his stint with the Swiss team.
