Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto wants Mick Schumacher to aim for a seat in the Scuderia in 2023. With his father a Ferrari legend and a member of the Italian team’s academy, Schumacher is expected by many to one day drive for them in Formula 1.

It won’t happen anytime soon, however, as the current line-up of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz is guaranteed to stay the same at least until the end of next year.

In addition, with both drivers being relatively young and performing well, it will be difficult to see any space after 2022.

Mick’s challenge

Nevertheless, Binotto has demanded that the German should bring himself into the team for the 2023 season.

The Italian Binotto told RTL: “I think that should be his challenge without a doubt. I think Mick has clear goals and that (driving for Ferrari) is part of it.”

Given his family name, expectations of Schumacher are already high and will undoubtedly rise should he ever drive for Ferrari. And while Binotto admits the team actually expects a lot from him, he doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the rookie.

“Before we decide when Mick is ready for Ferrari, he has to finish this year without pressure,” he added. “We don’t have to put pressure on him, that would be wrong. But we’re watching him closely. We expect a lot from him.”

Schumacher’s first season on the grid was something of a mixed bag in which he led his fight within the team but wasn’t really able to fight the other cars due to his poor Haas machines. Given that, there have been calls for Ferrari to move him to Alfa Romeo for the next year, but it seems unlikely to happen.

Binotto agrees and believes another year with the American team will be good for him and is happy with his performance so far.

The Ferrari boss said: “Haas will probably be great for Mick in his sophomore year because he will have the opportunity to show how good he is in F1. We know he is a good driver very happy. “
