When the Haas Formula 1 team announced that it would be setting up a new diving line-up in 2021, few were shocked when Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin were announced as drivers. In Mick’s case, his signing was deserved as he is the reigning Formula 2 champion of 2020 and the son of racing legend Michael Schumacher. Mazepin, on the other hand, was known for his father’s money and buying into motorsport.
Dad Dimitry would sponsor teams if his son drove for that team. The same was true for Haas when Mazepin Sr., Uralkali’s company invested $ 20 million in the team in 2021, with the same amount penned in for 2022.
These angry fans because Nikita Mazepin has never proven in his “racing career” that he is a driver who deserves his seat. His temper has caused many fights with competitors, but his father’s money always seems to suppress any real punishment. In short, Mazepin’s arrival in F1 was condemned from the moment it was announced, and his performance in Bahrain would have done his cause absolutely no favor.
“Mazespin”
During the race weekend in Bahrain, Mazepin was unable to settle in his Haas F1 car. As expected, the team was the slowest of the ten teams, with Mazepin and Schumacher forming the back of the field. Team boss Günther Steiner was apparently not too concerned about their performance and attributed this to the fact that they are green and would have to learn over time.
But while Schumacher steadily got his car under control, Mazepin walked backwards at first glance. He couldn’t adjust the car, couldn’t find the right balance, and spun four times over the weekend, including during qualifying and the race.

In qualifying, he drove past a train of cars to get out at the first corner. The yellow flags waved and other drivers withdrew – which affected their lap times. In the race, he spun around the third corner on the first lap and finished his race before it even started. After the race, Mazepin felt the ire of the internet, with Twitter in particular attacking the Russian driver and questioning his place in F1.
Mazepin’s teammate had a relatively better Sunday, finishing in 16th place. Both Schumacher and Mazepin had strong F2 seasons, with Mazepin taking three wins last year. Perhaps the F1 world should give the young Russian a fair chance to prove himself rather than judging his season before it even starts. Mazepin is a polarizing figure, but should be able to prove himself on the right track.
