Team-by-team analysis of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria on Sunday at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, round nine of the F1 championship in 2021 (listed in championship order):

Red Bull (Max Verstappen 1, Sergio Perez 6)

Verstappen’s third win in a row, fifth of the season and 15th of his career. It was also his 50th podium in F1. He won from pole position, leading every lap and taking a bonus point for the fastest lap. Verstappen is now 32 points ahead of Hamilton. Red Bull has won five races in a row. Perez started third in his 200th race but paid for an early mess with Lando Norris that saw him fight back from 10th place. The Mexican received two five-second penalties for a collision with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Mercedes-AMG (Valtteri Bottas 2, Lewis Hamilton 4)

Hamilton qualified fourth, overtook Norris in second, but then suffered damage to the curb at Turn 10 and had to maintain the car for the last 30 laps. Bottas started fifth, overtook Norris in the pit stops when the McLaren driver took a five-second penalty, and then got the green light to overtake a struggling Hamilton on lap 53, followed by Norris. Second place was the Finn’s best result of the season.

McLaren (Lando Norris 3, Daniel Ricciardo 7)

Norris took his fourth career podium and third of the season. He has now finished eight of nine races in the top five and is fourth overall, three points behind Perez. Ricciardo started in 13th and fought with the two Ferraris. McLaren drew 19 points ahead of Ferrari.

Ferrari (Carlos Sainz 5, Charles Leclerc 8)

Sainz started in 10th and Leclerc in 12th. Leclerc came off worst twice against Perez. Sainz did 48 laps on a set of hard tires before switching to medium. Leclerc let Sainz pass late to give him the best chance for places.

AlphaTauri (Pierre Gasly 9, Yuki Tsunoda 12)

Gasly made two stops. Tsunoda was fined twice for crossing the white line at the pit lane entrance. The couple started in sixth and seventh.

Aston Martin (Lance Stroll 13, Sebastian Vettel 17)

The walk was punished for excessive speed in the pit lane and slowed down when dirt got stuck in a brake duct. Vettel was hit by Raikkonen in the final laps and ended their races.

Alpin (Fernando Alonso 10, Esteban Ocon retired)

Alonso finished 10th with three laps to go, overtaking George Russell’s Williams. He started 14th after being hindered by Vettel in qualifying. Ocon retired at the start, which triggered the safety car after contact with Giovinazzi broke the right front suspension of his car.

Alfa Romeo (Antonio Giovinazzi 14, Kimi Raikkonen 15)

Raikkonen received two penalty points because of the collision with Vettel. Giovinazzi got tangled up with Ocon at the beginning.

We’re getting this close again after a great effort by both drivers, but the race ends in frustration.

Williams (George Russell 11, Nicholas Latifi 16)

Russell got painfully close to Williams’ first point in two years after starting from eighth on the grid. Latifi received three penalty points for ignoring the double yellow warning flags waved.

Haas (Mick Schumacher 18, Nikita Mazepin 19)

Mazepin also received three penalty points for ignoring warning flags.
