The Uralkali Haas F1 team completed the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on Sunday with Mick Schumacher (16th) and Nikita Mazepin (17th) at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo and Dino Ferrari (Italy).
Both drivers took the Pirelli Cinturato Blue fully wet tires at the start of the 63-lap race, as it was raining during the build-up and the first section of the track was completely soaked. Schumacher won two spots and finished in 16th place, while Mazepin’s VF-21 got away unscathed after Williams’ Nicholas Latifi made contact on the straight. Schumacher was surprised by the conditions in the subsequent safety car phase and spun against the wall along the main straight, but was able to queue up for repairs and again took part in the race with Green Intermediates, one place behind his teammate. Mazepin came into play on lap 14 after taking over Intermediates and soon the track dried up enough for slicks. Schumacher stopped for red soft tires on lap 22, while Mazepin boxed three laps later.
The race was stopped on lap 33 because of the rubble after a major collision between Mercedes ‘Valtteri Bottas and Williams’ George Russell at Tamburello. Both Schumacher and Mazepin adopted yellow center tires for the rolling restart and maintained their position until the checkered flag. Schumacher 16th and Mazepin 17th recorded the first doubles for the Uralkali Haas F1 team in the 2021 season.
Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen recorded the 11th victory of his Formula 1 career ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and McLaren’s Lando Norris.
Nikita Mazepin: “So much happened in this race, starting at the start of the Wets without really expecting it, because the sunshine wasn’t long before the start, then a red flag and a lot of things that basically happened . We just weren’t really quick. ” Today it was enough to fight with others. It was a good learning experience in my pocket and seeing the checkered flag was good. I don’t think Nicolas (Latifi) knew I was there when he came back over the track. I gave him all the space I had, but I don’t think he knew I was there. I think it was just unfortunate for him. I don’t think anyone had an easy one today, but I think it was a very exciting race for the fans. “
Mick Schumacher: “It was my first time in a Formula 1 car in the wet – it was definitely not easy. To be honest, I wasn’t exactly sure what happened at the moment I turned, it happened pretty quickly. I’m putting on. I don’t know if I was too aggressive or if it was a puddle or whatever. It’s something we’re going to analyze, but I’m pretty disappointed with myself. We had a good position up until then. Overall think I think it was positive. We finished 16th in the race and we were good in terms of pace. We saw the checkered flag and that was the goal. “
Günther Steiner: “We brought two cars home in a pretty eventful race with changing weather conditions. There were a few things that got in our way again, but in the end we recovered and the race with Nikita (Mazepin) and Mick (Schumacher) ended. ” ) on checkered – which is good. That’s what I always want us to do the laps and the guys to learn. I want them to keep improving and it was especially good for Nikita today that he finished the race after missing it in Bahrain. He has now had a full race. Mick has recovered well from the earlier part of his race. As much as it is not the result that makes you happy, what makes you happy is that we’ve made progress on our plan, and if we can keep working like this – with fewer mistakes and better performance – we’ll be here this year. “
