Formula 1 Race Director Niels Wittich implemented the guidelines previously advised at the Australian Grand Prix that drivers would not be allowed to don non-compliant underwear or jewelry while driving.

Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton was critical of the decision, and received a temporary exemption for his pieces of jewelry that cannot easily be removed, while Sebastian Vettel made a point of wearing briefs over his race suit before getting in the car for Friday practice .

Hamilton wore a lot of jewelry in a press conference, along with three watches, and quipped that next time he’ll wear four. “I got an exemption here, I’ll get an exemption the rest of the year,” he said.

AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly pointed to wanting to wear a cross for religious purposes while Haas F1 Team driver Kevin Magnussen outlined a reasonable stance.

“They made me take my (wedding) ring off,” said Magnussen. “The wedding ring… if something bad was going to happen I want to wear my wedding ring as it kind of feels bad to take it off. Something like that, your wedding ring, there must be somehow a way to let us take responsibility and take it away from the FIA. (A waiver) will be great.

“The underwear, we can make fireproof ones, manufacturers are making it as before we were never told (of the rules), I understand that. And big chains. But small things like a wedding ring… and if you’re religious, I can understand that too.”
