Dmitry Mazepin buys son a new F1 chassis to compete with Haas’ Mick Schumacher

Dmitry Mazepin buys son a new F1 chassis to compete with Haas' Mick Schumacher

Nikita Mazepin’s father and Haas F1 team sponsor says he personally paid to build a new Haas chassis for his son.

“Yes, it was really a problem, but we worked with the team to solve it,” said Russian billionaire Dmitry Mazepin, whose Uralkali company is the title sponsor of Haas.

Dmitry Mazepin says an unfair mid-season situation developed between his son and teammate Mick Schumacher when Haas was leading resources for the 2022 season. Papa stepped in to improve the situation.

“A chassis was destroyed in a serious accident at the end of the year and a new one was built. The team then decided to give the new chassis to Mick Schumacher,” he told the Russian media company Match TV. “But when Nikita drove the old one, he immediately gave feedback that he was completely different. In June, the team and I agreed that the chassis would switch between drivers so that they could be compared. Nikita had a nice weekend with the newbie and Mick had a big accident.

“So we decided to build a new chassis and I paid for it with my own money because we believe the team should fight on an equal footing.”

22-year-old rookie Nikita insists he doesn’t mind that some in the F1 paddock think he has bought into the series.

“I have very little interest in being wrong,” he told the Dutch magazine Formule 1. “You know what they are saying – be yourself because everyone else is taken. So I don’t get carried away by other people’s opinions in Formula 1 because I deserve it, and I’ll leave if I lose my passion for the sport. “

Mazepin also says he and his wealthy father are misunderstood.

“Few people know that I was still in a poor family when I was born. And my father comes from an even poorer family,” says Nikita. “His mother always had to save two years to buy him a birthday present.”
