Disappointing Haas F1 Team Nearly Ready to Shift Development Focus to 2023

  • After a strong start to the year, with Kevin Magnussen’s fifth place in Bahrain propelling Haas to third in the standings, he has regressed to eighth overall.
  • Haas team principal Guenther Steiner relayed that the impending upgrade package is now likely to be introduced in Hungary,
  • Haas has not scored a single point across the past four Grands Prix while Mick Schumacher is one of only two full-time drivers yet to finish in the top 10 in 2022.

The Haas F1 Team’s upcoming upgrade package for its current Formula 1 car is likely to be the team’s only upgrade of the entire season.

While the majority of other Formula 1 teams have regularly brought upgrade packages under the championship’s new regulations, Haas has avoided adding swathes of updated components to its VF-22. The team’s philosophy has been to strive to extract increased performance that is believes is in its current-spec package.

After a strong start to the year, with Kevin Magnussen’s fifth place in Bahrain propelling Haas to third in the standings, it has regressed to eighth overall and is now tied with a recovering Aston Martin. Haas finished last in 2021 and hasn’t finished higher than eighth in the standings since 2018 when it finished fifth.

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner relayed that the impending upgrade package is now likely to be introduced in Hungary, one event later than planned, because Haas “took a step back to check something in the wind tunnel,” but production is now pressing on.

“Hopefully it is a big step performance wise, that’s my hope,” said Steiner, before confirming that after the upgrade arrives Haas “will shift (focus) to next year’s car; that’s it, no further updates. You always continue to develop and obviously if you find something that on this year’s car gives you a big advantage, yes, you do it, but we are not specifically working for this car on a big package (after Hungary).”

Haas has not scored a single point across the past four Grands Prix while Mick Schumacher is one of only two full-time drivers yet to finish in the top 10 in 2022.

Steiner believes that, having negotiated the wall-lined Baku circuit, Schumacher needs to keep his head down at the challenging Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this weekend and then rebuild from there.

“It isn’t easy for him at the moment and then these races, Baku, here, after crashing in Monte Carlo and Jeddah, the best he can do in these two races is to not to any damage in my opinion because that will knock his confidence even more,” said Steiner. “Then on tracks where you’ve got a little bit more space to find your limit hopefully he can come back.

“I think at the moment most important for him is to keep his nose clean and just to calm everything down and calm, everything around him down as well.”
