Uralkali Haas F1 Team drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will start the British Grand Prix from positions 18 and 19 respectively after occupying these positions in the first 100 km sprint qualifying of Formula 1 at the Silverstone Circuit.
After the starting grid for the 52-lap race on Sunday was specified by the rating from the 17-lap sprint, Formula 1 broke new ground with the lights going out and the action on the track on Saturday afternoon.
Schumacher and Mazepin started the sprint on positions 19 and 20 after the traditional knockout qualifying on Friday. Contact between the rookie pairing on the first lap resulted in a spin for Mazepin at turn three, but both cars kept going. Sergio Perez spun on lap six, leaving the Red Bull Racing driver in sequence, which temporarily pushed Schumacher to 18th place, but the Mexican caught up a bit before retiring to the pits on the final lap. As a result, Schumacher was 18th with Mazepin 19th in the checkered flag.
Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen won the first sprint – the Dutchman took pole position for the British Grand Prix, his fourth straight pole and fifth of the season, plus three additional World Championship points for victory. Verstappen defeated hometown favorite Lewis Hamilton – the British racing driver secured second place on the grid for Sunday’s race and two points. Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas was third, the Finn took the last offered point in the sprint.
Nikita Mazepin: “I got off to a very good start – one of my best starts this year. The nature of this track means I was on the outside of T2 and then on the inside of T3. You’re trying to keep up the speed, but this Car on. ” The left has better braking power and you are both trying to take the corner, but then I had to dodge my teammate. Günther Steiner: “For me personally it was a good experiment – but it’s not about what I think, but what the fans think. If we decide they like it, then I’m for it.
