Bright spots for the Haas F1 Team from Kannapolis after the Austrian Grand Prix

KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) – From the Haas F1 team: Uralkali Haas F1 team drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, based in Kannapolis, competed in the Austrian Grand Prix, round 9 of the 2021 FIA Formula 1 World Championship Places 18 and 19 at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday.

“It’s the end of our first triple header this year – so I think everyone is ready to go home and take a little break before we prepare for the next race,” said team boss Günther Steiner. “We showed a good performance as a team in this racing series and of course we have a few more triple headers ahead of us this season. We will be well prepared, but it is tiring to get involved. We had the expected result from today’s race. Both guys showed a solid performance, we just can’t do more at the moment. The learning is continuous and the drivers are getting better. “

Schumacher started from position 19 on Pirelli P Zero Yellow Medium tires and escaped light contact with Esteban Ocon from Alpine on the first lap and finished in 16th place. Schumacher extended his stint on medium-sized tires until lap 35 of the 71-lap race before pitting for a new set of the white hard rubber, which he kept until the checkered flag in 18th. The result ensured that Schumacher held his 100 percent record in Formula 1.

“It was a challenge – the softer tires meant that we generally had to do a little more management,” said Schumacher. “There was a part of the race where our pace was the same as Alfa Romeo and Williams. So it seems that we couldn’t keep those lap times consistent. We have to analyze what we can do better, but I think we learned something especially at the beginning of the race. We had a good first lap and were able to get into the mix straight away in T1 and T2. So we’ve learned a lot on this side and now we’re going openly to Silverstone. “

Mazepin also started on the medium-sized mixture and improved by one position at the expense of the outgoing Ocon. In a race with little wear ahead, Mazepin claimed 19th place and then followed a two-stop strategy. Mazepin pitted on lap 28 to switch to hard tires and pitted again on lap 46 for another set of hard tires – holding them to the finish line and finishing in ninth place, finishing eighth in a row.

“We used alternative strategies – we made two stops that didn’t work,” said Mazepin. “I think the tire waste wasn’t as big as we expected, but it was the blue flags. You cannot keep your pace because you have to stop more. It was a long afternoon. “

Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen dominated the race with his fifth win of the season. The Dutchman ended up ahead of Mercedes-Valtteri Bottas and McLaren driver Lando Norris.

The Uralkali Haas F1 Team will be back in action at the British Grand Prix, which will be held July 16-18 at Silverstone.
