Brawn rejection proposals F1 rule revolution is not required

With Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen barely separated in the drivers’ standings, and with a more diverse selection of winning drivers this year, there have been some suggestions that the current rules of F1 provide everything the sport needs.

Additionally, there are concerns that the overhaul triggered by the new 2022 cars will spread over the next year, allowing the better-equipped teams to handle the changes much faster.

But Brawn has rejected any suggestion that F1 is making a mistake with what is slated for 2022, as the goal of the rules is to address areas – like the ability of cars to follow each other closer – that are currently lacking.

In his official F1 column, Brawn said, “This weekend I heard some comments on whether the regulation changes are needed for 2022 as we are enjoying such a golden season right now.

“I think that fails to recognize the fact that the championship this year is exciting, but the cars are still having difficulties following each other closely and creating opportunities for overtaking.

“While the 2022 rules won’t change the situation overnight, I think they are a much better platform for improving racing on the track in the future, with even more wheel-to-wheel action.”

Brawn believes some changes that occurred during the Liberty Media era – like the cost cap – helped make the current title fight so tight.

“Both championships will bring us to the end of the season and will be one of the most exciting finals to our year in a long time. F1 is blessed, ”he said.

“Why are we having such a great season? When I was leading teams, there was no silver bullet. It was about hacking at everything to make incremental improvements. I think it’s the same with sports.

“For me there is no doubt that the upper cost limit and the rule changes that have been made will have a positive effect on the closeness and intensity of the championship.

“There is no way for a team to put massive resources into a championship and try to run away from it.

“Resources are limited now and the teams are also focused on next year’s car, which takes a lot of time and resources. And all of this contributes to a close championship. “

However, Brawn believes it is important that all of the rules in F1 still allow the best teams and drivers to come out on top rather than simply ending up in the lottery.

“We still want a performance society,” he claimed. “We still want the best team to win. But we don’t want them to win after a country mile just because they have a bigger budget than everyone else. It is gratifying to see how things develop.

“No team runs away with this championship, which is becoming a battle for the ages.”
