Berger: Mick is the typical Schumacher

Gerhard Berger sees many similarities between Mick Schumacher and the young German’s father, which suggests that the Haas rookie has a long career in Formula 1.

Ferrari saw the wisdom in placing the young Schumacher with the Haas F1 team in their current, comfortably stunned state of irrelevance on the F1 grid, a decision that is still confusing but is not the subject of this article.

But rather the background to Berger’s observations in an interview with Sport1, Berger: “Mick Schumacher does everything well. He delivered exactly what can be expected of him under the given circumstances: he beats his team-mates, he has clean races, he makes few mistakes.

“You can also see how he can read and analyze races. He is the typical Schumacher. You can tell that he learns quickly and absorbs everything. Even if Haas is not a top team, after a few races he has clearly shown that he is their number one.

“That’s why I believe in his future, I see that he will be a good Formula 1 driver. How far it will go remains to be seen. His father’s footsteps are huge, so I don’t think it’s fair to make such comparisons. “

Indeed, if Mick can do a fraction of what Michael did, he would be a top division success. Uncle Ralf wasn’t too shabby either, with six Grand Prix wins and six poles.

Of course, Michael was a phenomenon that exploded on stage to dominate headlines for two decades and garner an incredible seven F1 world titles with 155 top division podiums, 91 of which were wins.

Berger recalls: “I quickly understood what to expect when Michael came into Formula 1, he was a terrifying rival from day one. We had him under control for two years, but no more. Of course he was already great in my time, but he really started at Ferrari. “

Although it took five stormy years to win the title for the Reds, Michael owned F1 from 2000 to 2004, leading Ferrari to its greatest years when the sport experienced a massive boom early in this century. Perfect timing, as history has shown.

Berger continues: “Above all: What fascinates me most is how Michael got Ferrari back on the road to success. Ask me, or Sebastian Vettel, or Alain Prost or Fernando Alonso … We couldn’t.

“Of course we won races with Ferrari, but we didn’t turn them around. Only Niki Lauda and Michael Schumacher could do that, ”adds the winner of ten Grand Prix races in his eleven years at the top of the sport.
