KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) – Uralkali Haas F1 team drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, who are based in Kannapolis, placed 16 and 17 respectively at the Belgian Grand Prix – Round 12 of the 2021 FIA Formula 1 World Championship on the Circuit de Spa -Francorchamps on Sunday.
“A long afternoon for everyone, but the weather just didn’t play along and it’s a tough decision not to race. Thank you to all the fans – they are the real heroes of this race – for holding on and waiting for us to get out, but the weather didn’t help us. Fortunately we have a race next weekend, so we don’t have to wait long, ”said team boss Günther Steiner.
In Belgium, heavy rain fell during the day, delaying the introductory lap by 25 minutes. The race management allowed two induction laps, but quickly found it unsafe to race. There was a delay of almost three hours before a 39-lap short-distance race began behind the safety car, in which both Mazepin and Schumacher were fitted with Pirelli Cinturato Blue rain tires.
But after just three laps behind the safety car, the race management stopped the race and the race was not restarted because the rain continued to hit a foggy Spa-Francorchamps. Since two laps were driven, it was enough for a race classification with Schumacher 16th and Mazepin 17th. Mazepin ended fictitiously with the fastest lap of the race.
“It could have gone many different ways today,” said Mazepin. “With so much water on the track, it was very difficult to see – at least from my starting position. We weren’t that fast behind the safety car, but you just weren’t sure where the car was in front of you, I just had to try to keep my distance before the rain settled in the air. It wasn’t the best day for us, but I can imagine it was even more difficult for the fans. I could see that some of them didn’t even have umbrellas. With the amount of water falling today, they must be soaking wet – but thanks to everyone who stayed. I had an early end to the race in Hungary, our race today ended prematurely, but at least this time we have a triple header stint with Zandvoort and Monza ahead of us. I hope for good races. “
“On the one hand it was very frustrating that we were looking forward to the race so much and then we couldn’t drive, but on the other hand the fans waited so long for the race to go on,” said Schumacher. “They must have frozen, but they stayed outside, so thank you and sorry for failing to show what we had to show. Visibility was the main concern as we couldn’t see anything. We will have even more options in the future. “
At the top, Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing) was declared the winner with his sixth win of the season, ahead of George Russell (Williams) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).
The Uralkali Haas F1 Team will be back in action at the Dutch Grand Prix, which will be held from September 3rd to 5th at the Circuit Zandvoort.
