Aston Martin has started construction on its new Formula 1 factory, which is slated to open in early 2023.
Spanning 37,000 square feet and costing £ 150 to 200 million to build, the massive expansion of the current site will include a new wind tunnel and simulator next to the Silverstone circuit. Not only will it greatly improve the team’s facilities, but it will also bring people who are currently spread across multiple locations together in a single location.
A formal groundbreaking ceremony was held, attended by Aston Martin’s chairman Lawrence Stroll and team CEO Otmar Szafnauer, as well as JCB chairman Lord Bamford. Stroll promised that his team’s factory “will be the only one currently operational, taking into account financial regulations”.
The new space was designed by Ridge and Partners and is being built in collaboration with Gardiner and Theobald. Adjacent to the existing facility, two new buildings are being built, all three of which are connected by a walkway.
A new building will house the design, manufacturing and marketing departments of the team. Another will have a new wind tunnel that will have a modern steel belt roller line system and a flow imaging section area. The existing building will be converted to accommodate staff rooms and the logistics department.
Aston Martin’s new base will house its expanded workforce. It will be the first new factory built by an F1 team in 17 years. Stroll expects it to set the standard in sports.
“It’s a brand new, purpose built campus,” he said. “It is the state of the art.”
“It will be the first 5G factory that is completely sustainable,” explained Stroll. “It will be a real smart factory in the truest sense of the word.”
He sees the expansion of Aston Martin’s premises as essential to the team’s goal of fighting for the championship.
“This is really in line with our aggressive and ambitious recruiting drive here,” said Stroll. “We will be able to have the number of employees that we so desperately need and need to fulfill my ambitions to fight for the World Cup.

“It will be an inspiring and empowering place to work, design, produce and hopefully win. So this is really the first big step next to what we have done so far with regard to the premises. “
Stroll believes the Aston Martin base will outperform its rivals once it is completed.
“There has never been anything like it before in the automotive industry, whether in Formula 1 or in others, especially not in racing,” he said. “It shows my faith in the team, it confirms my ambitions and it confirms my belief in Formula 1, because that is really an investment in Formula 1 too.
