Alfa Romeo team boss Fred Vasseur has admitted that the team has “failed” this season.
Before the summer standstill, Alfa Romeo finished ninth in the constructors’ championship and is only followed by the goalless Haas.

On three points, two less than what the team achieved at this stage last season, Vasseur told GPFans Global: “It’s really a mixed feeling, but I think we have one in terms of performance good step forward, probably the best on the grid.
“If you take the gap to pole position, I think we have the best improvement between the 10 teams, and for a variety of reasons, as Ferrari did a good job on the PU side. We also got the chassis made a good development and it pays off.
“Now I have a mixed feeling because the goal is not to make a good percentage, but to score points, and we failed. I want to have a lot more points in the championship.”
Vasseur highlighted the improved reliability of Formula 1 in recent years as the reason for Alfa Romeo’s mistakes.
“I think if you take a look we could have done it [scored more]but for various reasons we didn’t and one of the reasons is that we now have so many cars finishing races, so many cars finishing, “he explained.
“If you are in qualification P12 or P13, you will finish P12 or 13 and get no points
“If, as I said, I want to be positive, the most important thing for the company’s future is that we have made a good step for the first time in a while. The last two seasons have been tough seasons, last year, due to external circumstances, I would say.
“But we stayed focused on the goals and continued to improve and do the work and in the end it’s a good step forward for the team.”
