
In a Haas that could not be brought forward, Nikita Mazepin experienced a season without highlights. The rookie was almost always at the bottom of the field, often the slowest of them all. For the average athlete, it would have taken a year to get discouraged.
Positive minded
Mazepin seems like a positive person. Instead of sinking into self-pity, the Russian knows how to find the positive in an oh-so-difficult debut year. Yes, the mediocre results have been difficult to manage at times. But more important were the progress he made as a driver, as Mazepin from Motorsportweek records. All of this gave him a tremendous confidence boost.
The most important lesson of the year? “That you have to eat an elephant bite for bite,” says Mazepin. “And Formula 1 and an elephant are similar.” The Russian naturally means that you have to go step by step in Formula 1. All hopes are for the coming year, when Haas hopes to come out with a much more competitive car. Unsurprisingly, it took a year of working on it, so there were hardly any updates for the car in 2021.

Use it well
Mazepin believes the hard lessons will do him and Haas good in 2022. With a more balanced and predictable car, the Russian expects to be able to keep pace more easily in the midfield. Then better results should come. “Because it is difficult to go home satisfied with P19.”
