1 championship leader Max Verstappen is on pole position at the French Grand Prix.
Hamilton has directed the last two editions of the French race, winning both laps from pole position, but the seven-time world champion had no answer to the pace of Red Bull and Verstappen this weekend.
Hamilton, who is using Bottas’ old chassis after a planned part change, was not quite at one with his machine and complained in practice on Friday that something was wrong with his car.
So he will take some comfort in joining his title rival in the front row. Still, it is Verstappen, who should have won in Azerbaijan 14 days ago, before suffering a flat tire five laps from the end, who goes into Sunday’s race as the favorite to extend his four-point lead.
