There was the inescapable feeling of an elementary school show and tell session when it came to Formula One’s approach to the British Grand Prix. First, their concept model 2022 was (re) unveiled, which was decked out in a holographic paint job that was more in line with a Clinton Morrison football sticker from the early 2000s. Then came the sprint qualifying – definitely not a race, according to the FIA - race, one of the Formula 1 experiments with a new weekend format. One can only imagine Edna Krabappels of the Simpsons sardonic reply of “Thanks F1, I look forward to seeing it again in a few races”.
As the sprint racing-style motorsport event drew to a close and the drivers hurriedly huddled into the back seat of a van, much like a scene from Withnail & I, the social media discourse erupted to decide if the race was a good one and when the half-hour spectacle enriched the race weekend rather than hindered it.
