
Michael Schumacher’s Netflix documentary is both heartbreaking and ironic given his aversion to public gaze. While this is ostensibly an exploration of one of Formula 1’s great careers, it is also viewed from the perspective of the 2013 skiing accident that cost him what appeared to be a normal life.
We do not know what the present looks like within the walls of his house. Netflix has not invaded the privacy that the family is protecting with an iron resolve.
It is this feeling of the unknown that gives the project a certain sharpness, covering it with a painful tension and a feeling of deep sadness, since it cannot escape the fate that befell it in the French Alps.
Schumacher’s wife Corinna remembers his dissatisfaction with the snow conditions on that tragic day in Meribel and his suggestion to go skydiving in Dubai instead. If only they had it.

The conditions were not ideal, he said in a typical Schumi phrasing that reminded me of an exchange with him in a similar setting during one of Ferrari’s epic PR weeks in the Italian Dolomites, scenes of which can be seen in the documentary clips.
My employers paid a photographer a fee of £ 1,000 for exclusive pictures of the great man and you in the resort of Madonna di Campiglio. On the last day on which the job had not yet been completed, I had to intercept Schumi when he was leaving the chairlift at the top of the Groste slope before the traditional ski race at the end of the week.
Reluctantly he agreed and said, “Okay, but be quick, I have to test the course.” He only had media and guests to beat, but he wasn’t taking any chances. The name Schumacher was right at the top of the timesheets in each of my five participations.
Using statements from family members and close confidants in historical and current interviews, the documentary traces the development of a historical personality who brings together his early years on the karting track in Kerpen, where his father, a humble man, shoes his son’s kart in tires, that others had thrown away while his mother helped out at the cafe, with the more intimate climb into the F1 ranks.

Lewis Hamilton: Why the accident gave Mercedes an advantage over Max Verstappen and Red Bull in the Formula 1 title race
It is the story of an ordinary background boy transformed by a supernatural ability and an almost pathological desire for success, two elements that took Schumacher to unprecedented heights until Lewis Hamilton emerged.
I first met Schumacher at the 1998 British Grand Prix when he won in the wet. A year later, he was denied a chance for his first title with Ferrari at the same track when a brake failure resulted in a severe shunt at Stowe and a broken leg that lasted him for six races.
From 2000 to 2004 he was commanding, adding five consecutive drivers’ titles to the two he won at Benetton in 1994 and 1995.

The controversies that accompanied his career, including cynical collisions in championship duels with Damon Hill (Japan 94) and Jacques Villeneuve (Japan 97), the change of position with front runner Rubens Barrichello in the last corner of the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix, the blocking of Fernando Alonso in Rascasse during the qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix 2006 threw him the pecking order of the purists in the pantheon of the greats.
Also, the lack of internal challenge with a team completely built around him did not go well with Corinthian observers. However, if you listen to Eddie Irvine’s testimony, his first domestique at Ferrari in 1996, it wouldn’t have made any difference. Schumacher, he said, was incredibly good.
As proof of this, we just have to look at the reruns of his last race for the Scuderia in wet conditions at Interlagos in 2006. A mysterious mistake in qualifying left Schumacher tenth on the grid and a tire damage at the beginning of the race caused him to drop to 19th place.
From there, he drove through the field and finished fourth in a wet championship demonstration that recalled Jim Clark at Spa in 1963, Ayrton Senna at Donnington 30 years later, and Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone in 2008.
Three years after his four-year hiatus, I caught Schumacher again in southern Spain, where he fulfilled sponsorship obligations. The two mind-boggling laps that I spent with him in the passenger seat of a speedy Maserati are among the most beautiful moments of my career. Let’s put it this way, I had none of his lightness with the speed and was relieved when he finally took his foot off the accelerator.

I am quoting from the report that appeared in the Daily Telegraph. “We are now at the limit of the tires. I have to take it easy, ”he said with a few corners left. Don’t mind, old boy. “Look,” he said as we got out of the car. “What did I tell you?” He pointed to frayed pieces of canvas sticking through gaping holes where rubber used to be.
In our subsequent rest, we discussed his retired life. He spent his days, it seemed to me, trying to find ways to satisfy the need for extremes. He spoke of his love for thrashing on his motorcycle and skydiving, which he had just started. It came as no surprise when he announced later in the year that he would be returning to Formula 1 with Mercedes in 2010.
Three unproductive seasons in an uncompetitive car cured him of his infatuation with F1. In a development of historic importance, Schumacher was replaced by Hamilton, who reached his championship total in an unprecedented dominance during the hybrid engine era.
Hamilton was grateful for the three seasons he shared with Schumacher, although none ran at the top during that time. He could at least say he raced against the best, a driver whose legendary contribution to Formula 1 is compassionately captured through the soft lens of Netflix.
