
The sizeable collection of memorabilia accumulated over the course of my life in motorsport includes two small trophies on a shelf in my office. One of them, won by my childhood hero Jean Behra, comes from the 1957 Caen Grand Prix, while the other – from the same year – was awarded by the Automobile Club Roma and bears the inscription “Luigi Musso, Campione Italiano Assoluto”.
After the death of Alberto Ascari in a test accident in Monza in May 1955, Italian motorsport was in some desperation. Weg was as great a driver as motorsport knows, and a new local superstar was urgently needed. The hope was that in the end two young men – Musso and Eugenio Castellotti – could fit.
