The special features of the new Ferrari 296 GTB

The special features of the new Ferrari 296 GTB

The world has many car companies. Ford, Chevrolet, Honda, and Maserati are some of the biggest names in the automotive world. But perhaps the only name that has captured the hearts and minds of people around the world is Ferrari. Ferrari is probably the best-known and best-known car brand in the world, and no matter who you speak to, they’ll likely all have a soft spot for the Italian supercars. “Everyone is a Ferrari fan,” as a former Ferrari F1 driver once put it. They made some really iconic cars.

However, Ferrari seems to have a habit of releasing a new car more often than others at the moment. We just recently saw the unveiling of the new 812 Competizione. Now the brand has launched another car that they say defines “the fun of driving”. This is the new Ferrari 296 GTB, the company’s new mid-rear engine Berlinetta sports car. And also because this is the first Ferrari since 1974 to be powered by a roadworthy V6 engine, a milestone in the company’s history. So that’s all we know now about Ferrari’s latest offering.

The basics

Ferrari says this car is the latest evolution of the Berlinetta brand’s mid-rear two-seater and that it “redefines the whole concept of fun behind the wheel”. That remains to be seen. Then under the hood there is a completely different type of engine. The 296 GTB has a new 120 degree V6 engine that has been paired with an electric motor that adds another 122 kW of power. Overall, the car’s powertrain puts out a pretty respectable 819 horsepower, though of course it’s not as much as some new Ferraris like the SF90 Stradale have produced.

The car also has a premiere for Ferrari. The turbochargers are in a new position between the cylinder banks. This was chosen to enable more compact packaging of the entire powertrain, reduce engine mass, and lower the overall center of gravity. In addition to the regular car, there is also an Assetto Fiorano package, similar to the one that can be purchased for the SF90 Stradale. This pack includes lighter features and aero modifications to enable more power and take full advantage of the new car’s performance.

Electric motor

The electric motor of the 296 GT is actually quite interesting. It is the first Ferrari with a pure PHEV architecture with rear-wheel drive. For laypeople, this means that the combustion engine was integrated with an electric motor built into the rear. This engine was also derived from the brand’s Formula 1 technology so the engine now has an MGU-K system and inherits that moniker. This then is a Ferrari V6 hybrid, quite a significant business in itself. That’s all pretty impressive stuff from Ferrari.

The styling

With any car, styling will always be a pretty subjective matter. However, there is an argument that this is one of the cleanest Ferraris we’ve seen in a long time. However, Ferrari will use some pretty incredible aerodynamics on the new 296 GTB. The car has an active aero device to generate downforce, a first for a mid-engined sports car, and is based on what we saw in action on the Ferrari LaFerrari. The styling is similar to that of the SF90 Stradale and Roma but has very sleek lines that make it incredibly easy on the eye.

Ferrari actually took inspiration from the iconic 250 LM when designing the 296 GTB. This is particularly evident in the extended rear end that is located on the car. Also, a low hood and deep greenhouse help make the side body thinner, which gives the car a very comfortable side profile that is devoid of wildly complex surfaces or gigantic aero vanes. Speaking of aero devices: The Assetto Fiorano package will include multimatic dampers, carbon fiber elements on the front bumper, as well as on the front bumper, the rear deck and the interior, as well as a composite rear window.

Ferrari has certainly introduced a pretty eye-catching addition to its lineup, though we easily doubt if it’s even needed. However, there is every chance that with a car that weighs just 3,306 lbs and has over 800 horsepower to play with, this could be one of the most addicting Ferraris for years to come. That alone makes this an incredibly exciting release from the Italian automaker. Ferrari expects to launch the first copies in the European market in the first quarter of 2022 as it will compete against models like the McLaren Artura.
