Ferrari will take the place of reigning world champion in the two-day wet weather tire test to be held at Paul Ricard, the host of the French Grand Prix.
Mercedes was already testing Pirelli’s 2022 rubber when Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas tried the new 18-inch tires after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix last month.
Every team except Williams will test Pirelli’s new tires throughout the 2021 campaign before launching them next season.
The new budget cap rules prohibit teams from spending more than $ 145 million, mostly on expenses related to the performance of the car.
The budget cap excludes all marketing costs, racing driver salaries, and the costs of the top three paid employees on the team.
Mercedes was concerned about the additional cost of sending mechanics to Paul Ricard for the next week’s test.

At Thursday’s press conference, Wolff said, “We are trying to hit the budget ceiling, which is not trivial, and we couldn’t bear the costs associated with tire testing and we couldn’t have sent our mechanics on a long trip.”
Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto explained why his team replaced Mercedes.
“As Ferrari, we’ve always said that 2022 is somehow our priority over 2021 and that Pirelli tires will be tested to help Pirelli develop the new tires we think are important,” added Binotto.
“Luckily we didn’t have an accident at Imola, so at some point today we have more contingency with Mercedes, so we’re kind of happy to accept and support this.”
