Rumors have linked Sir Lewis Hamilton to a move to Ferrari for several years – and now he’s been invited to drive one of their Formula 1 cars.
But Mercedes doesn’t need to worry, and neither does Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. The car in question dates from 1970 – just 15 years before the world champion was born!
It is the Ferrari 312B that was driven by Swiss driver Clay Regazzoni this season and in which he won the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.
Nowadays it belongs to Paolo Barilla, himself a former F1 racing driver, who drove for Minardi in the first 14 races of the 1990 season and achieved the best result of 11th place in San Marino.
The 59-year-old from Milan is now an extremely successful businessman and Vice Chairman of the Barilla Group, the world’s largest pasta producer.
Talking about his classic Ferrari, which is now more than half a century old, Barilla told the Italian version of Motorsport.com in a video interview: “I drove it in Monte Carlo and it really touched me. But the car is hard to drive so I won’t do it again.
“It would have to be a driver who can appreciate the emotions of getting behind the wheel of this car. I think Lewis Hamilton is such a driver.
“When I hear him talk about driving, I can feel that he is a driver who appreciates the special features of a car.”

Whether the 36-year-old Briton will include Barilla in his offer is highly doubtful, as is the prospect of the seven-time world champion ever driving a modern Ferrari F1 car.
But Hamilton has spoken fondly of the Scuderia in the past, hinting that one day he might be tempted to join them, despite being indelibly linked to Mercedes after spending six years at McLaren.
“We have spoken occasionally, but we have no more than understood which options were on the table and which were not the right ones,” said Hamilton last year about a possible collaboration with the Italian giants.
“Our positions have never aligned. I think timing is important and things end up happening for a reason.
“In the last few seasons my contract always expired in different years than for all other drivers. In the end it went like this. “
