Alfa Romeo has extended its relationship with the Sauber Formula 1 team in a multi-year contract that is expected to run until 2024.
The deal began purely as a title sponsorship in 2018, and for the past three years the team has been called Alfa Romeo.
Negotiations to renew the contract had been going on for several months, and the new rules coming into effect next season helped encourage Alfa to stay in the sport.
The confirmation means that the team will continue to employ at least one Ferrari Academy driver in the years to come.
Antonio Giovinazzi currently has the seat while Callum Ilott is serving as a reserve driver this year, competing in FP1 sessions. Mick Schumacher and current F2 leader Robert Shwartzman are also potential future candidates for trips with the team.
“As a historic Italian automobile brand, Alfa Romeo was born on the racetrack,” said Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato. “Today we are proud to continue to honor that racing DNA by placing it at the heart of the future of our brand. We are driven by passion and excellence.
“F1 represents a state-of-the-art laboratory for the future electrification of our offering, which is fully in line with our vision for the years to come. In addition, motorsport brings with it the incomparable global presence that we would like to use for a successful future. “
