Race starts were one of the Spaniard’s strengths during his time at McLaren, but he’s still trying to improve Ferrari’s system to optimize his starts this year.
While Sainz quickly got up to speed after his winter change at Ferrari, he admits that his short breaks remain an area where he can make even more improvements.
“I just did a big data analysis with my engineers 10 minutes ago to understand what I could have done better,” said Sainz after the race in Spain.
“What is clear is that I have to get a little better and have a little more confidence in the start system and the way we work to get that perfect start and the perfect first 100 meters.
“I don’t think that was the main limitation today. The main limitation was a bit of positioning afterwards, getting in and out of the slipstream and packing up behind you [Esteban] Ocon in Turn 1 and lose many positions to the cars outside. “
Sainz got off to a good start at Ferrari and scored points in three of the first four races, including the best result to date of fifth place at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

However, Sainz doesn’t feel like he was able to maximize his weekends to get the “perfect result” like his teammate Charles Leclerc did.
“It’s a combination of factors to get the perfect result, like Charles did today,” he added.
“You first have to put the weekend together completely, and it depends on a good qualifying in order to drive the lap in the third quarter – if I had made it [this weekend]I would have started earlier and it wouldn’t have been a problem. And then get started.

“That was what I was particularly good at at McLaren when I put the whole weekend together and that is what I need to keep improving as the races continue with this team to try to work at the highest possible level. “
