Carlos Sainz says he is still working on building his confidence in the starting system of Ferrari’s Formula 1 car after being off the track in Spain.
Sainz has usually been a good starter in his F1 career so far, but lost positions to Daniel Ricciardo and Sergio Perez on the first lap in Barcelona and slipped from sixth to eighth place.
Sainz couldn’t overtake the drivers and got stuck in midfield, while Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc managed after the fourth start and finally landed on the checkered flag for 20 seconds.
Sainz lost positions off the line on his debut in Bahrain before taking profits at both Imola and Portimao, earning him an average of zero places on the first lap of the year.
The Spaniard stated that he was aware of his struggles from the start and was already discussing them with Ferrari to gain confidence and build a better understanding after his winter break from McLaren.
“I did an analysis 10 minutes ago with my engineers to understand what I could have done better,” said Sainz after the big race in Spain.
“What is clear is that I have to get a little better and safer with the start system and the way we work to get the perfect start and the perfect first 100 meters.

“While I don’t think this was the main restriction today, the main restriction was positioning, getting in and out of the slipstream, and then packing up [Esteban] Ocon goes into Turn 1 and loses some positions to the cars outside.
“It’s a combination of factors to get the perfect result, like Charles did. You have to put the weekend together completely and it comes to a good qualifying to get a good lap in the third quarter and move forward start. Then it wouldn’t. ” It was a problem and then it started.
“That is what I did particularly well at McLaren when I put the whole weekend together and that is what I need to improve further over the course of the races with this team in order to continue to work at the highest possible level.”
After four races this year, Sainz is eighth in the F1 drivers championship. Half of Leclerc’s total points are in fifth place in Portugal.
