Russell is suspicious that the Ferrari engine is taking a "big step," but he sets Williams' goal of beating Haas and Alfa Romeo

George Russell has set himself the goal of consistently beating Williams against Haas and Alfa Romeo this season.

Williams ended up at the bottom of the constructors’ championship last year after not scoring a single point. But instead of being cut off at the end of the field like last year, they were part of the pack and regularly challenged and beat Haas and Alfa Romeo – both Ferrari customer teams.

Scuderia boss Mattia Binotto said his team was planning an all-new engine for this season, which had fallen to fourth and last place in engine efforts last year.

“We want to be in the same position as last year [of racing Haas and Alfa Romeo] as the bare minimum, ”Russell told F1.com when Williams launched its challenger 2021 on Friday. “We know and appreciate that the Ferrari powertrain will take a big step forward. It’s a bit unfortunate for us, so we had to do almost double the work over the winter.

Nicholas Latifi can’t wait to drive the “different, new and fresh” FW43B

“But that is the bare minimum [target], fighting and ahead of Alfa Romeo and Haas, which in my opinion is a realistic goal, and keep your fingers crossed to hopefully fight towards midfield. “

Russell, who will be standing by Nicholas Latifi at Williams’ side again this year, impressed the Formula 1 world when he stood in for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in Bahrain last season and almost won the Sakhir Grand Prix before dropped a pit mix from the field.

He values that kind of form is not possible at Williams this season and instead focuses on making the most of what he has.

“After every single race I know whether it was a successful weekend or not,” he added. “It doesn’t matter whether I finished 14th or only 17th or 18th in Q2. I know whether I think I got the absolute best out of the car or not so I think it would be a successful year and say, you know what, 75% of the races or more we did absolutely everything out of it.

“Of course you can’t do it every weekend. I am just being realistic. [I want to leave each weekend] to know that I haven’t made any stupid mistakes, to keep improving as a driver, to keep improving and to help the team. “
