No reason to ponder Ferrari’s previous interest in F1

No reason to ponder Ferrari's previous interest in F1

Current F1 CEO and President Stefano Domenicali announced earlier this week that he would sign Hamilton during his tenure as Ferrari team principal between 2008 and 2014.

Failing to get a deal across the line, however, Domenicali said Hamilton, who did not join Ferrari during his F1 career, will be remembered as a “sliding door” moment for the sport.

“That’s true and we discussed it, but I think the answer Lewis was able to give was the right one,” Domenicali told Sky Sports.

“There are moments in life when it is sometimes very important for me to think about a movie: Sliding Doors. There are moments when when you’re not getting on an elevator, you stay on the ground.

“That was the situation Lewis lived in at that particular time in his life, but I don’t think he can blame his choice, at least because he has had an incredible career.”

Speaking to Sky Italia shortly after his 100th win at the Russian Grand Prix, Hamilton admitted his “dream” was to drive for Ferrari and said he wasn’t exactly sure why the move never came about.

But ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix that weekend, the seven-time world champion insisted that Ferrari was always a “short-lived” option because he favored the “loyalty” that comes with a Mercedes driver.

“I have no reason to think about it,” said Hamilton. “It’s been part of every end of term, you need to do your due diligence and see what your options are.

“I’m really proud of where I am and what I have achieved with Mercedes. I always thought – and I think I’ve said it before – the idea of going to Ferrari was short-lived in the sense that at Mercedes you are with a family for your entire life.

“If you look at all the historic drivers who drove for Mercedes, who were there up until their 90s. And you don’t see that with any other team or brand.

“I’m very, very proud of that. We also achieved more than anyone else, and that’s because of the great teamwork, the loyalty, and I don’t take that for granted. “
