At the Milano Monza Motor Show, a monument was unveiled in the driver’s hometown depicting two-time world champion Alberto Ascari.
Ascari, who was born in Milan, died during the test drives in Monza and the depiction of him driving one of his famous Ferrari F1 cars was inaugurated on the street that bears his name in Milan – Piazza Alberto Ascari.
The Ferrari legend was world champion in 1952 and 1953 while racing for Scuderia before racing for Italian designers Maserati and Lancia later in his career.
The Motor Show shows new machines from 60 car and motorcycle manufacturers from all over the world, which took place over the weekend in the center of Milan in front of great media interest.

The installation was unveiled by the President of the Milan Club and Mayor Giuseppe Sala, who said, quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Occasions like MiMo [Milano Monza Motor Show] 2021 is a time to rethink the world of cars by rethinking mobility – commented the first citizen of Milan – the city has a need to lead the change in urban mobility in Italy. “
The event’s president, Andrea Levy, also spoke during the four-day event: “The honor of the Ascari monument begins on the second day of the event, a day that … unites Milan and Monza, the cities of the car show.”
Ascari is widely regarded as one of the great drivers in the sport. He was the first multiple world champion in Formula 1 and fought throughout his career with the later five-time title winner Juan Manuel Fangio and won 13 of his 32 race starts.
The Italian was on the podium in more than half of his Formula 1 Grands Prix and took pole position 14 times – with second place at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1950 he was Ferrari’s first podium winner in this sport.
Aside from Michael Schumacher, Ascari is also the only driver who has won world championships for Ferrari in a row – who in 2020 was the first team to take part in 1000 Formula 1 Grands Prix in Mugello.
