Marko admits Ferrari is threatening to join the F1 title fight between Red Bull and Mercedes

Marko admits Ferrari is threatening to join the F1 title fight between Red Bull and Mercedes

Ferrari caused the biggest surprise of the season in Monaco. While everyone expected Mercedes and Red Bull to dominate at the front of the field, they spoiled the party by emerging as the unlikely favorites. And the people at Red Bull don’t want to underestimate their ability to conjure up a few more surprises this season. Maybe they can even take part in the F1 title fight?

Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko gave Formula 1.de an exclusive interview when asked about the threat posed by the Italians after the Monaco Grand Prix. In response, Marko not only admitted their threat, but also foresaw that they would interfere in their fight with Mercedes.

“This danger exists, but it exists for Mercedes as well as for us,” said Marko. (Quotes via GP Blog)

But maybe this narrative is exaggerated. After all, most expected Ferrari to have an advantage in Monaco because of its slowness. And most expect to return to the upper pantheons of midfield on the next race weekends. However, Marko predicted that they will be equally strong in other Grand Prix as well –

“I don’t think Monaco will be a one-off race [for Ferrari]. They are particularly strong in the slow corners and on stretches where “notch driving” plays an important role. “

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc would be hard to beat if he had started from pole in Monaco: Marko

It is well known that it is very difficult to overtake in Monaco. While you can play around with strategies and rely on pit stops to score under and overlap, it’s rare to get ahead of the curve in face-to-face wheel-to-wheel combat on the narrow streets of Monte Carlo.

It is therefore no surprise that Marko believes that had Leclerc not been cruelly eliminated shortly before the start of the race, he would have likely made it to the podium. “If Charles Leclerc had started from pole it would have been very difficult to” overtake him during the race. “
