It also means that Hamilton, who finished the previous races in second position, extends his winless run to 22 races having failed to win a single race in 2022.

He came closest in Austin at the United States Grand Prix, where he led with six laps to go before Max Verstappen overtook him. It was far from a close race in Mexico City, however, with Verstappen surging off into the distance and the W13 unable to produce the pace to catch him.

Hamilton was also forced to watch on glumly as his team-mate George Russell claimed a double victory in Brazil, winning the F1 Sprint race and then the main event on Sunday ahead of Hamilton.

His successive second-place finishes appeared to give Hamilton the edge over Sainz. But Mercedes’ reliability has cost Hamilton at the crucial moment – and he will be left to lick his wounds over the winter before the 2023 season begins in March in Bahrain.
