LEWIS HAMILTON has admitted his surprise at never switching to Ferrari.

As the biggest name in Formula 1 over the decades, the Scuderia has previously employed legends such as Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio and Fernando Alonso.

But British star Hamilton has never stepped into the famous red jumpsuit and was nowhere near it.

Connections have surfaced, most recently during his dominance of the sport with Mercedes, when Ferrari was considered a career farewell for the 36-year-old.

However, he is under contract with the German brand until the end of 2023 and describes a switch to show jumping as “never really possible”.

Speaking to Sky Italia about GPToday, he remarked: “For years, when I come to Monza and see the fans, I hear them say, ‘Come to Ferrari!’

“It warms my heart, but it’s pretty amazing that I’ve never driven for Ferrari after so many years. Because it is a dream for everyone, a goal to be achieved.

“It was never really possible and I’ll never know exactly why.

“I wish them the best and in the near future I just have to stop them from winning the World Cup instead [laughs].

“I have a couple of Ferraris at home that I can drive, but not the F1 Ferrari.”

Hamilton was signed to McLaren from an early age and drove with the British team for six years, winning the world title in 2008.

McLaren’s demise coincided with old teammate Fernando Alonso’s move to Ferrari, and their fiery relationship was not in sight.

In 2013 he replaced Michael Schumacher at Mercedes with the aim of making the team serious championship contenders.

Hamilton achieved that and a lot more when he stormed to his second crown in his second season with the Mercs – and has left Ferrari behind to this day.
