He is a seven-time world champion with his own clothing line – but not everyone is impressed by Lewis Hamilton’s fashion sense. Least of all, it seems to be ex-F1 driver Eddie Irvine who made fun of Hamilton’s love for extravagant outfits on Instagram. He posted a meme with two pictures – one titled “F1 Driver 1976” and the other “F1 Driver 2021” – to emphasize how the outfits have evolved in the sport.

From 1976, the then world champion is James Hunt, who portrays a polite look in gray overalls while holding a racing helmet under one arm and wrapping the other around a scantily clad woman.

In 2021, Hamilton, 36, wears a multi-colored plaid coat over leopard print shorts and huge green laces in his boots.

To be on the safe side, Irvine, 55, threw in six laughing emojis to underline what he thought of Hamilton’s sensibility for clothing.

Irvine was known for his glamorous lifestyle when he was often referred to as a playboy in Formula 1 in the same form as Hunt, who died of a heart attack in 1993 at the age of just 45.

However, this was a concept Irvine always denied when he once revealed that his life was 90 percent work. He peaked in his career in 1999 when he drove for Ferrari and lost the Drviers Championship to Mika Häkkinen by just two points, but helped his team win his first constructors’ title in 16 years.

Hamilton, meanwhile, will no doubt continue to combine his fashion interests with his F1 career.

As early as 2018, the Mercedes driver swapped the pit lane for the catwalk in order to host his own fashion show for his new clothing line. Together with the American fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, he created his own line called TommyXLewis, which was launched in Shanghai.

Since then, the two have teamed up again to bring a completely vegan laundry line to market.

Hamilton was in the news this week for his devastating evaluation of the Belgian Grand Prix, which was limited to just two safety car-led laps after a delay caused by torrential rain. The drivers were awarded half points and Max Verstappen was declared the winner, reducing the Englishman’s lead to just three points.
