Leclerc will test positive for COVID-19 for the second time in 2021

It is the second time this year that the Monegasque driver has tested positive after contracting the virus as well in January after coming into close contact with another case.

The Ferrari Formula 1 driver suffers from mild symptoms but feels “good” and will self-isolate at home.

In a statement, the team tweeted: “Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow driver Charles Leclerc tested positive for COVID-19.

“In accordance with protocols required by the FIA and the team, Charles was tested on his return from Abu Dhabi.

“He is feeling fine now, with mild symptoms, and will self-isolate at home.”

Leclerc has yet to comment on his positive test as his last social media post yesterday suggested he was heading to Maranello to prepare for the 2022 season.

He also suffered mild symptoms when contracting the virus in January.

Nikita Mazepin was the last driver to contract COVID-19 and was banned from the season finale after testing positive last week.

Williams team boss Jost Capito tested positive the week before and forced his absence from the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.

Several drivers were affected last season, with George Russell making his first appearance for Mercedes at the Sakhir Grand Prix following the illness of Lewis Hamilton.

F1 Sporting Director Steve Nielsen admitted he was “concerned” about the potential impact of the renewed tightening of COVID-19 restrictions around the world on the schedule for next year.

The advent of the Omicron variant in recent weeks has led countries to reintroduce some restrictions as cases rise in the UK, with a record 88,376 new positive test results on Thursday.
