The French automaker was open to the fact that the key to getting more points this year is to better understand why its A521 is faster in qualifying over a single lap than in a race.
Alonso says the team has some ideas about what could be causing the problems with their tire management, but is aware that the situation is complicated by the fact that the team also had some particularly tough Sundays.
“We have some theories and of course we investigate what happens after each race,” he said. “But there is no clear trend as to when we performed well.
“At Portimao, for example, we had less deterioration in the race than the others. We had very good speed and passed people like crazy on the final laps. So it’s not something that will tell us.” either way [what is happening].
“Every weekend seems to change so it’s a little bit unknown for the race. But here Friday [in France] Looks good so let’s see what we can do. “

Alonso qualified ninth for the French GP and hopes to improve his points record after finishing sixth in the last race in Baku.
However, he believes that Alpine needs to be realistic right now, as he doesn’t think it’s fast enough to believe it can make great strides.
“I think big points will be a challenge,” he said. “I think we have very competitive people around us: the two McLarens, the two Ferraris and [Pierre] Gaseous.
“And of course there are people who start from P11 with a free choice of tires. So we have to be realistic. Optimistic? Yes. But also realistic when it comes to the chances of big points. I think there will be a few points “available, but not that many in a normal race.”

He added: “We know there are some teams, cars and drivers who are stronger than us both on a lap and in the race.
“Ferrari, they were on pole position for the last two races and now they are starting right in front of us. Are we thinking of beating them? Hopefully. But they were on pole position for the last two races, so I don’t have any “” I don’t know if we’re in the exact same league at the moment. Let’s see what we can do. “
