The former Ferrari team boss may return to the team as a consultant

The outgoing FIA President Jean Todt was the architect of Ferrari’s dominant phase, when Michael Schumacher won 5 titles in a row and the team won 6 constructors’ titles. Now he’s ready to get back on the team after retiring from the FIA, where he has been for 12 years since his iconic appearance on the hopping horse. Reports from Italy suggest that Ferrari boss John Elkann had negotiated a return of the Frenchman, who will act in an advisory role. That role could extend beyond the F1 team, but also beyond the street car business.

Ferrari last won a constructor’s title and a driver’s title when Todt was still in charge – with Raikkonen winning his only driver’s title in 2007 and Ferrari’s last constructing title in 2008. Todt has previously said he is open for a position as long as it fits his schedule and previous commitments in France, where he has road safety initiatives and a hospital under construction.

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto confirmed the rumors about the return of his former boss to Maranello, but also said that nothing was set in stone and so far these were just rumors.

Ferrari is in a phase of transformation. It has a new CEO in Benedetto Vigna, who took over in September and has already laid off three top executives, including the Chief Technical Officer and the Production Manager. The successors will be announced in January.
